02:30pm - 03:30pm

The Isle of Wight and Surry County Historical Societies present "John Rolfe", portrayed by Richard A Cheatham, a 14th generation descendant. Richard is the founder and director of Living History Associates, a graduate of VMI, a school teacher, museum educator and TV reporter.

John Rolfe was the pivotal early American and the actual husband of Pocahontas, whose romance in those early years was not with Captain John Smith, as is oftern thought. Rolfe's marriage to Pocahontas at Jamestown brought an end to seven years of fighting between the native Powhatan people and the English. Rolfe was an entrepreneur who, through profits in the Native American plant tobacco, prevented the abandonment of the failing English colony, Virginia. That colony later evolved.

Without Rolfe's leadership and contributions, the United States would not likely exist today. He was a member of America's first representative government, a little parliament called the Virginia General Assembly, years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. His story is America's founding story, one unfortunately very few Americans have ever heard.
