AGRICULTURE IN SMITHFIELD AND ISLE OF WIGHT COUNTY
Isle of Wight County was first settled as Warrosquyoake Shire in 1634 as explorers from the Jamestown settlement made their way across the James River, trading with the Warrosquyoake tribe that lived here. The town of Smithfield was settled in 1752 as a leader in the peanut industry until a fire in 1921 destroyed the peanut warehouses along the Pagan River. When the peanut industry moved to Suffolk, the town turned instead to the production of hams. The Gwaltney and Luter families built a thriving industry which continues today with Smithfield home to the corporate headquarters of the worlds largest pork producer, Smithfield Foods.
The majority of the county remains rural, with many of the local farms open to visitors, offering them a hands-on experience to learn about the origins of their food and other agricultural products.
Smithfield and Isle of Wight are located in Coastal Virginia, making them a great day-trip destination from both Virginia Beach and Williamsburg, or a relaxing weekend getaway. The itinerary listed below is just to get you started. Theres so much more to see and do!
