Battles and their famous commanders are perhaps the most frequently discussed topics of the American Civil War. The life of the common soldier and his experiences are largely neglected or forgotten among tales of noble charges of generals bravely leading their troops. While the life of the common soldier was not one of romance and glory—but instead of hardship, hunger, exhaustion, fear and even loneliness—soldiers came to rely on one another for survival as comrades in arms. Through their shared experiences of?war, this mutual dependence meant everything in the field, and once proven worthy in battle, these soldiers were loyal to each other to the end, even after the battlefields were silent. Some of these comrades in arms were a bit unusual. Attend this lecture to learn more.
